Response to Hannah's Post
I’ve already seen both episodes, but of course I watched them again because these are my two favorite shows. After watching the Friends Episode I would rate this episode an 8 on funniness. The whole idea of Joey pretending he is still in a movie but is actually just dressing up as a gladiator was so funny to me. There have definitely been episodes I’ve found funnier, but this one was still very good. I would give this episode a 7 for enjoyment. The plot is somewhat predictable that Joey’s friends would fly out to Vegas and find out he is not in a movie. I still enjoyed it, especially the smaller plots taking place during the episode, like Ross walking in on Rachel, and Joey’s hand twin. I think there was slapstick humor, definitely sarcasm, incongruity, slight naughty humor, and people doing stupid things. Next, for The Office Episode, I would give this episode a 9 for funniness as I found myself laughing to myself for most of the episode. For enjoyment, I would give it a 10 because this is probably one of the best episodes of the show, and I love the plot with Pam and Jim as well as the Dundies. For types of humor, I believe that there was sarcasm (especially with Pam and Jim), dark humor (Michael’s joke about the person killing themselves), joking socially, naughty humor, and self-deprecation. After seeing your post about laugh tracks, I believe that only partially affected how much I enjoyed each show or found them funny. I personally just enjoy Friends because of the plot and the laugh track does not influence me that much, mostly because I barely notice it. It is nice that The Office doesn’t have a laugh track, or else I do not think I would enjoy it as much. I loved the different approach you took for your blog post and how you did not say what the experiment was for because that may have changed how I rated the shows.
I do agree that you barely notice the laugh track when watching Friends unless you're thinking about it. Honestly, I never usually notice the laugh track. However, when I watched the episode this time, I did notice it. I found that focusing too much attention on the background audience is a little annoying. This is why in the first blog post I made I was sure not to mention anything about laugh tracks because I didn't want you paying too much attention to it and subconsciously skewing the results. :) You like Alex ranked the episode of The Office higher than the episode of Friends. Do you think you enjoyed The Office more because it doesn't have a laugh track? Or did other parts of the episode content contribute to your more positive perception of funniness?
ReplyDeleteI also don't really notice the laugh track that much, though perhaps it does affect my sense of how funny it is. I'm just used t seeing it as a format at this point. It's also interesting how you point out that you liked the Office episode more than you found it funny, whereas the reverse was true for Friends.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. I think that friends is funny because of the actual content in the show not because of the added laugh track. I understand that the laugh track is supposed to help people find humor in the shows content, however, if anything I find the laugh track to be more annoying than "helpful".
